Dates are from the TSBPE file. An insurance date that has passed may mean an updated certificate has not been processed yet; check the live record. Spot an error? See the contact line at the bottom.

How to verify a Texas plumber's license

  1. Open the TSBPE Public License Search: vo.licensing.hpc.texas.gov/datamart/selSearchType.do (no login needed).
  2. Choose "Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners," then "Plumbing – Licensed or Registered."
  3. Search by license number using digits only (enter "38935," not "M-38935"), or search by name.
  4. Check the status, the expiration date, the insurance status, and any disciplinary actions.

Steps from TSBPE's guide, "How-To Look Up Current License Status". TSBPE says a company offering plumbing to the public must have at least one Responsible Master Plumber and a current certificate of insurance on file (source).

Homeowner tips

Burst pipe or major leak

  • Shut off water at the main shutoff valve. It's usually where the water line enters the house, or at the meter box near the street. Find it before you need it.
  • If water is near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel, stay away from it and turn off power only if you can reach the breaker safely and stay dry.
  • Open a low faucet to drain the lines, take photos for insurance, and then call the licensed plumber you choose.

Water heater basics

  • If the tank is leaking, turn off the cold-water supply valve on top of the tank. Then turn off the power (electric) or set the gas control to "off" or "pilot" (gas).
  • If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy suggests a setting of 120°F for most homes (energy.gov).
  • In Mineral Wells, replacing a water heater counts as plumbing work that needs a permit (see Permits).

Possible slab leak signs

  • A water bill that's higher than usual with no change in use
  • The meter dial moving while every fixture is off
  • Warm or damp spots on the floor, the sound of running water when nothing is on, or new cracks

These are general safety tips, not professional advice. A licensed plumber should diagnose the problem.
