Water heater repair in Mineral Wells: a homeowner's guide

What to check, what to shut off, and what the City requires before a water heater is repaired or replaced.

Please read: This is an independent informational guide. It is not a plumbing company, does not perform or offer plumbing work, does not hold a plumbing license, and does not send, schedule, or recommend any plumber. Listing here is not an endorsement, and no one paid to be listed. Contact any business directly, and always verify its license with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) before hiring.

If the tank is leaking

  1. Close the cold-water supply valve on top of the tank.
  2. Shut off the power at the breaker (electric heater) or turn the gas control to "off" (gas heater).
  3. Keep water away from the electrical panel and outlets.

If there's no hot water

Temperature setting

The U.S. Department of Energy says most households can set water heaters at 120°F to save energy (energy.gov Energy Saver).

General safety information, not professional advice. Gas and pressure-relief work should be done by a licensed plumber.

Permits for repair or replacement in Mineral Wells

City of Mineral Wells: a plumbing permit is required before any installation, alteration, repair, replacement, addition or remodel of a plumbing system, and all plumbing work must be completed by a licensed Master Plumber registered with the City ("Do You Need a Permit"). First inspection requests: (940) 328-7715 or inspections@mineralwellstx.gov (Building Permits).

Replacing a water heater is a replacement of part of the plumbing system, so under the City rule above it needs a permit and a city-registered licensed Master Plumber. The City says homeowners may work on their own homestead under permit and inspection, but not on rental property.
